    Imperfection is Beauty

    Three candle bowls

BrendaClews has been posting an interesting series of blogs about what she is looking for in a partner.  Several other readers, including Vexations, have joined in to philosophize.  It is a healthy and stimulating conversation.  I think that when we look at the things we're looking for in another person, we can learn a lot about our own selves.

I don't feel qualified to make large statements on this because I'm not in their shoes.  My guess is that perspective changes drastically when you are in the thick of it.  If you look out of a window, you can see a view of the yard.  If you change the place that you're standing, you may see a whole other picture.

Imperfection is something that has been on my mind.  This year has been the most difficult that I can remember having.  Sometimes when I'm mad at fate or God, I tell myself this:

"Everything is exactly as it's supposed to be."

Life is so damned imperfect.  People are imperfect.  I think of this many times while I'm working on gourds.  I'm beginning to love the texture of imperfection as the mark of originalty.  Of course, each person has to decide how much imperfection that is different from their own or hard to tolerate they are willing to put up with.  I wrote to Ken not long ago that quirky people usually raise quirky children.  I look at it as texture.

STILL listening to Tony Furtado.  I can't seem to get enough of his music!!  It has....you guessed it.....texture!!

Same hand-pollinated gourd from last post.
    It's about  2 1/2 inches long now.

  • Imperfections really do make things beautiful. My favourite mugs and plates I have at home are the ones I made in the first semester of ceramics school. They are all wobbly and lop-sided. But they have so much more life and interest than the boring factory made plates I have. The Gourd is looking healthy!

  • I think I would be worried if someone was too perfect... there has to be grit to make a pearl... I love your gourds - I am thinking they will make good xmas presents this year!

  • Those candle holders are SO preddy!  You know, I should do something similar to that... then peeps would be more "accepting" of a gourd gift because it is functional and decorative (I have pragmatic friends and fam.)  Yes, it's hard to believe all the time that everything is exactly as it's suppose to be... if we believed that more... that there really is a divine plan... then we would not be nearly so anxious.  The pursuit of perfection can be a terrible imperfection though!  I think order is good... and there are some things that just don't work if they aren't close to perfect (like brushes and paint or the pollination of gourds, heh!)  But, like you said, we would do well to learn that the impefections are part of the process: learning to see something lovely in that which was originally thought perhaps unlovely.

FYI, I still don't have a stinkin' wood burner... in the finance of things, something always grabs its spot... or should I have money, I have not mind to remember.  I still want to burn and stain some gourds... they are in my head and must be let out... sometime.  Maybe Christmas.... I can get a burner be lots of indoor time to work. My days have more time now that kids are almost grown and gone and hubby works out of town.  Okay, I should shut up now cos my comment is growing as long as your blog, gah...  BTW, is Tony related to Nelly?  Seems likely to me.  Hope Jimmers is home in a spiffy and his potassium is behaved. (((Love & Hugs)))

  • great art!

people are very much like gourds arent they?... all so different looking, yet all serving basically the same function and design specifications.

  • I am often discouraged as well at the state of people.  Then I try to remember how wonderful it is that we are given the Free Will to Choose to make ourselves better, through whatever higher power we follow, even if it's within ourselves.  I call myself a pseudo-Christan.  I love your photographs here and look forward to reading more of you.
